Lots of people who come to me have great business ideas but lack the confidence to do anything about it. This is a common problem as often people may feel they do not have the required skills and attributes to start up on their own.
Talking to other people who have already set up their own business can be helpful, allowing you the chance to learn from their experiences and share any concerns. This is generally referred to as networking and can be as formal or as informal as you like, for example you can have a chat to one of your friends with their own business or attend a formal networking event set up for this purpose.
In the latter situation I find it helps to do your research as I’m a great believer that knowledge aids confidence. Plan ahead and find out about the event, the dress code, the location, the start time and anything else you think might help you feel more involved.
Walking into a room full of strangers can be very daunting but remind yourself that everyone is there for the same reason and they want to talk to you. It sometimes helps to take someone with you such as a partner or a friend.
Once you’re there get to know people, talk to as many people as possible and sell your business. These are great places to meet new people who may all be potential clients. Pay attention to detail, such as people’s names and always follow up with them after the event if they have shown an interest in your business.
Networking can also help from a business point of view as you might meet someone who you can partner with.
Taking a course can also be a great confidence builder, you can learn all about running a business on our range of free workshops.
The workshops include:
Money Making Ideas Workshops
E-Bay
Franchising
This is also an excellent way to meet other people and build contacts. Many of our participants keep in touch with each other afterwards which is a great way to share experiences as you begin your journey into business.
Something else which I often advise clients to do is to approach voluntary organisations and offer your product or services to them for free to help you gain experience and boost your confidence before you approach paying customers.
